    Description

    Robert Desnos. Autograph Manuscript Signed.
"Robert Desnos." Two pages in French on A La Liberté café stationary, 8" x 10.75", Paris; [circa 1920s]. This appears to be a draft of Desnos' thoughts on "Painting and Illusion." The draft includes cross outs and added words.

"A quaint tale from the olden days tells of a painter gifted by a fairy with the power to make real the objects he painted. Imprisoned by a tyrant, he conjured on the canvas a series of ropes, which once 'real' and tied together, allowed him to escape. I recall a drawing that shows him before one of these canvases with one of these ropes.

I imagine our painters [French painters] forever trapped in their cells painting the useless instruments of their liberation.

What kind of calenture [fever that sailors were susceptible to which made them see green fields rather than ocean that they then jumped into] throws us now, us poets and those gifted with the magnificent virtue of imagination, into a quarrel with inventors and builders, magicians and priests. My dear Malkine [Georges Malkine (1898-1970) French Surrealist painter] is among the first. He painted the concrete image of dreams and the dream conjured them up. Now he draws up boulevards and panoramas with poetic emotion and a loving sense. He gave this emotion and this sense a pure mirror image and that is how we came to shake hands.

And the imprint of our hands will not disappear for a long while from the tangible air; our hands have marked it for eternity."

Robert Desnos (1900-1945) was a French surrealist poet.

Condition: Manuscript has a horizontal and vertical fold; pages have slight paper loss on left hand side where they were detached from a pad; each page has a small hole around the right hand side of the horizontal fold, with no effect on text; otherwise good.
