First Edition of Roald Dahl's First Book

Roald Dahl. The Gremlins, From the Walt Disney Production. A Royal Air Force Story by Flight Lieutenant Roald Dahl. New York: Random House, [1943].

First edition (with no indication of subsequent printings). Quarto. Unpaginated. With full-page color illustrations and with several black and white illustrations by the Disney artists throughout.

Publisher's red cloth-backed illustrated paper boards. Illustrated endpapers. Boards rubbed along edges and extremities. Dust jacket has price of $1.00 with some creasing, closed tears, and rubbing; reverse has extensive reinforcement with heavy brown paper tape, causing some bleedthrough staining to obverse of jacket. Aviation-themed bookplate to verso of front free endpaper. Otherwise, a very attractive copy of Dahl's first book in generally near fine condition.

The publication of this, Roald Dahl's first book, preceded the British publication by several months. Dahl, an RAF officer during World War II, wrote this story about a displaced group of creatures whose forest home has been destroyed in order to build a British airplane factory; they retaliate by plaguing RAF pilots and mischievously tampering with their aircraft. The story was optioned by Disney and was intended to be made into an animated film, but it was never produced. A note on the copyright page states: "The RAF Benevolent Fund will receive the author's share of the proceeds from the sale of this book." Dahl's next children's book, James and the Giant Peach, did not appear until eighteen long years later.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
