    Description

"The Adventures of Four Nasty Children and Our Hero with Mr. Willy Wonka and His Famous Candy Plant"

Roald Dahl. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, [1964].

First edition (the American edition preceded the English edition by three years), first issue (with the six-line colophon). Octavo. 161 pages. Illustrated by Joseph Schindelman.

Publisher's original red cloth, with blind-stamped title on front cover and gilt lettering on spine. Top edge stained red/purple. Mustard endpapers. Binding very slightly cocked. Tiny snag to top edge of rear board; short tear (approximately three-eighths of an inch) to bottom edge of front board. Original dust jacket is lightly soiled, darkened along spine and fore-edge folds, and with a shallow crease at the top edge, running almost the whole width of the front panel; a couple of tiny chips and three closed tears ranging in length from a quarter-inch to one-and -one-half inch (the longest along the front flap fold). Overall, a near fine copy of a childhood classic.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
