    Description

Richard Hooker. Of the Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie, Eight Bookes by Richard Hooker. London: by William Stansby [for Matthew Lownes], [undated, circa 1611]. Small folio (11.25 x 7.30 in.; 285 x 186 mm). [52], 453, [3, blank] pages. Engraved architectural title by William Hole, letterpress title for Book 5 within woodcut allegorical border. "To the reader" signed "J.S." [John Spenser]. In fact, only books 1-5 are present, as noted by ESTC S119096. Contemporary vellum with gilt borders and floral ornaments in each corner. British armorial crests with the initials "R R" appear in the center of each cover. Rebacked with original backstrip laid down; title-page remargined. The vellum has scattered dark spots with modest shelf wear. Numerous contemporary notations in text; 1775 ownership inscription on the rear endpaper. Very good. Richard Hooker (1554-1600) was an English priest in the Church of England, this likely his best known work, has been characterized as "probably the first great work of philosophy and theology to be written in English" (Forrester, History of Political Philosophy). STC 13714; ESTC S119096.
