The Last Part of Hakluyt's Celebrated Chronicle of English Exploration from the Sixteenth Century

Richard Hakluyt. The Third and Last Volume of the Voyages, Navigations, Traffiques, and Discoverise of the English Nation, and in some few places, where they have not been, of strangers, performed within and before the time of these hundred yeeres, to all parts of the Newfound world of America, or the West Indies, from 73. degrees of Northerly to 57. of Southerly latitude ... London: George Bishop, Ralfe Newberie, and Robert Barker, 1600.

Second edition. Folio in sixes. (10.875 x 6.75 inches;276 x 171 mm.). [2, sectional title supplied in facsimile], 129-838, [4, "The catalogue of the voyages, &c."] pages. This is the majority of the third volume only of Hakluyt's Principal Navigations, bound without the two preceding volumes and all leaves before L3 and after 4A2, and lacking some seventeen leaves: S3, S4, 2G2, 2O2, 2O5, 2X2-2X5, 2Y1, 2Y4-2Y6, 3G5-3G6, and 3P5-3P6. Blackletter.

Contemporary calf, rebacked to style. Single fillet gilt border, spine ruled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt brown morocco lettering pieces, gilt board edges, fore-edge uncut. A few leaves trimmed close, affecting headlines and printed marginal notes. Boards rubbed and corners rounded, with some small bits of loss. Foxing and spotting throughout, with a triangular dampstain to the upper portions of all leaves from 3F6 on, but especially from 3F6-3S6. Occasional short, marginal tears, and some leaves with significant tattering to edges, especially in signatures 3S and 3T, affecting printed marginal notes. A venerable if well-used copy of this four hundred year old book.

This book includes the majority of the third volume of the second edition of Hakluyt's celebrated chronicle, which comprises a remarkable and comprehensive assemblage of English exploration narratives from the sixteenth century; as the sectional title has it, this third and last volume includes accounts of the voyages to America.

Richard Hakluyt (1552?-1616), English scholar and clergyman. His Principal Navigations "contains accounts of the voyages of Raleigh, of the Cabots, of Drake's circumnavigation, of Martin Frobisher's search for the Northwest Passage, and the like. His work, which reflects the great exploring spirit of the Elizabethan age, gave additional impetus to English exploration, conquest, and colonization" (Benét's Reader's Encyclopedia).

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
