One of Burton's More Scarce and Desirable Titles, Limited to 500 Copies

Richard F. Burton. Falconry in the Valley of the Indus. London: John Van Voorst, 1852.

First edition, only 500 copies printed. Twelvemo. xii,107 pages. Four tinted lithographs. Lacking the eight pages of publisher's advertisements.

Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edge gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Discoloration to the frontispiece from tissue-guard. Very good.

Burton's fourth published book. Though today Falconry in the Valley of the Indus is one of Richard Burton's scarcer and more desirable titles, in its day it was his most sluggish to sell. "It was never sold as a remainder, and till at least 1910 was still procurable from the successors of Van Voorst" (Penzer). Harting, in Books on Falconry, sums the book up thusly: "For a writer having no practical knowledge of the subject, but merely describing what he saw and heard, this little book is well-written, and has a charming frontispiece by J. Wolf representing a Goshawk seizing a gazelle, with other illustrations."

    Abbey 479. Harting 66. Penzer, 41.
