    Description

Zardankark Avetarani Mlke Taguhvo (Ornament Illustrations of the Gospel of Queen Mlke). Venice-San Lazzaro: Mekhitarist Congregation, 1902. Thin folio. Printed wrappers. Some edgewear. Very good.
The book was published on the 1000th anniversary of the composition of the oldest illuminated Armenian manuscript extant in our days, kept at the library of the Mekhitarist Congregation in the monastery of San Lazzaro (Venice). At the time, the manuscript was said to have been copied by order of Queen Mlke, wife of King Gagik I Artzruni of Vaspurakan, and dated 902. However, several decades later, the date of assembling was determined to have been 862, and then the manuscript may have been copied also on that date or a few years before. The book contains a description of the manuscript, black and white reproductions of text pages, and rare color reproductions of miniatures and the canon concordances. This copy of the book has a dedication in French by Fr. Jean Aucher, Abbot of the Mekhitarist Congregation, dated 1938.
