    Mather and Tompson's Response to Herle

    Richard Mather and William Tompson. A Modest & Brotherly Answer to Mr. Charles Herle His Book, Against the Independency of Churches. London: Henry Overton, 1644.

    First edition. Quarto. (Approximately 7.25 x 4.75 inches). [4], 58 pages.

    Bound to style in modern quarter calf over marbled paper boards. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Some toning, soiling to text. Still, near fine.

    This rare tract was written by Richard Mather of Boston and William Tompson of Braintree in response to The Independency on Scriptures of the Independency of Churches (1644), a work by Charles Herle, a fellow Lancashireman. Herle was an influential member of the Westminster Assembly and an advocate of Presbyterian church government. Richard Mather was a major architect of the New England Congregational way of church government.
