Marcus Vigerius. Decachordum Christianum Iulio II Pont Max Dictatum. [Fano: Hieronymus Soncinus, 10 August 1507]. First edition. Folio (12 x 8 inches; 304 x 207 mm.). aa8 A10 B-U8 X-Z8 &8 A10 B-E8 F10 AA-BB8. With woodcut title-page (Vigerius' arms within a decorative border), ten full-page woodcuts depicting episodes in the life of Christ, each within decorative borders, and thirty-three woodcut vignettes of Christ's suffering in the Passion section (with several repeats). Near contemporary pigskin over boards, brown gilt morocco lettering label. Skillfully rebacked with later endleaves. Some bumping to spine, mild chipping to spine label, binding thumbsoiled and rubbed, boards bowed, gutter facing title-page starting, some repairs to inner margin of title-page, some toning, foxing to text, occasional thumbsoiling and neat ink notations, light wear, soiling to edge of text block, ink title at lower edge of text block, bookplate and shelf label on front pastedown. Still, near fine. One of the most handsome books from the first press in Fano, with excellent woodcuts. This is Vigerius' most famous work, with the woodcuts mainly unsigned. The printer, Soncino, employed Francesco Griffo as type-cutter; Griffo was eminently qualified for this task, as he had previously worked for Aldus Manutius, and had designed and executed all of Aldus' typefaces. Adams V746; Sander 7589.
