A Study of Witches and Ghosts from 1682

Joseph Glanvill. Saducismus Triumphatus: or, Full and Plain Evidence Concerning Witches and Apparitions. In Two Parts. The First Treating of Their Possibility, the Second of Their Real Existence. [London]: Tho. Newcomb, 1682.

    Second edition. Small octavo. [2], 52, [12], 162, [6], 78, [14], 273, [1], 67, [3], 5-45, [17], 24, [2] pages. Engraved plates, including frontispiece.

Contemporary full speckled calf, rebacked with original leather laid down. General light rubbing. Marbled page edges. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Pages with mild toning. Occasional notations. Small abrasion to center margin of page 21 at rear, barely affecting text. A tight copy in very good condition.

In this work, Glanvill acknowledges that "most of the looser Gentry, and the small pretenders to Philosophy and Wit, are generally deriders of the belief of Witches and Apparitions." Glanvill was himself a skeptic in natural philosophy, but his empirical investigations of witchcraft led him to a wholehearted belief in terrestrial spirits. This work is an enlarged edition of his Some Philosophical Considerations Touching Witches, 1667.
