Daniel Wadsworth Lewis. AN ORATION ON THE DEATH OF MR. ELI KELSEY, A SENIOR IN YALE-COLLEGE. New Haven: Josiah Meigs, 1788. First edition. 11, [1 blank] pp. Contemporary ink ownership inscription on rear blank page. Disbound, tanned, lightly worn. Good+.
A scarce oration, which Kelsey's fellow classmate dedicated to Eli's father Aaron Kelsey. Kelsey must have been a bit older than usual for a college student, because he was a veteran of the Revolution. "There is nothing remarkable in the history of his earliest years. At an early age however, he took arms in the common cause, and was several times in battle, where he behaved with the firmness becoming a soldier. After he left the army, his desire of knowledge induced him to join this society, of which he was a respectable member."
