Charles Maitland. The Church in the Catacombs: A Description of the Primitive Church of Rome, Illustrated by its Sepulchral Remains. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1846. First edition. Octavo. Numerous in-text illustrations and one engraved fold-out plate. Bound in half calf over marbled paper covered boards, five raised spine bands with gilt rules and gilt lettered title label. Binding rubbed and scuffed, lower half of spine torn and peeling, joints starting. Hinges cracked, endpapers with minor dampstains, small holograph pen and pencil annotations on recto and verso of front free endpaper, previous owner's name in ink on facing blank fly-leaf, foxing and occasional soiling. Very good.
