    More Information:

"Allestree, Richard (1621/2Ð1681), Church of England clergyman. "Allestree took his academic duties seriously. He applied himself to study and worked each night until 8 p.m. with the result, claimed Fell, that "few of his time had either a greater compass or deeper insight into all parts of learning; the modern and learned languages, rhetoric, philosophy, mathematics, history, antiquity, moral and polemical divinity" (Fell, sig. c2vÐd). As leader of the theology faculty Allestree was keen to maintain the tenor of the king's 1662 instructions to preachers to avoid abstruse and speculative doctrines which might excite controversy. Harmony within the university, which was after all one of the Church of England's two seminaries, would strengthen the church against its enemies, the Roman Catholics, the dissenters, the Socinians, and the Hobbists.... Allestree's influence on the late seventeenth-century church may owe less to his preaching or his university lectures than to the series of moral and devotional works...
