    A Wonderful Armenian Prayer Scroll

[Prayer Scroll]. The hmayils (Pahlavi humav "blessed") are talismans in the form of scrolls that protect the carrier (traveler, patient, or any other faithful in need) from various calamities. It is a collection of prayers to Christ, the Apostles, many saints, the angels, the saint kings, and others to be protectors of the roll's owner. They used to be handwritten, but printed ones were also produced in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This one was printed in 1166 of the Armenian era (=1717 A.D.). Length of approximately 27.5 feet and is composed of pages glued to each other. It contains 30 color engravings with explanations. The image on the crucifixion of Christ has the initials of the engraver, Grigor of Marsovan. There is no mention of either place or printer. A few lines at the end identify the receiver of the amulet as Poghos (the Armenian name for Paul), whose name has been also filled in many blank lines throughout the roll. From the collection of a gentleman of New York.
