[Mormons]. [Oliver Cowdery, Joseph Smith, and Sidney Rigdon]. Latter Day Saints' Messenger and Advocate. Kirtland, Ohio [and] Pittsburgh: November, 1836-July 1, 1845. First editions of fifteen issues of this early Mormon newspaper. Quartos. Self-wrappered and string-bound. Each issue is sixteen pages (10 x 6.75 inches; 265 x 174 mm.) (note: several issues are smaller due to trimming). Text toned, generally worn, soiled, several issues chipped and torn, page 1 of Volume I, no. 1 of the Pittsburgh issue lacks the upper corner, and has some chipping to the previous owner's signature. Several with ownership signatures. Still, very good examples of this fragile, rare early Mormon newspaper. The newspaper was originally established after the destruction of the press for the previous Mormon newspaper, The Evening and the Morning Star in Independence, MO. The paper was relocated to Kirtland, OH, and was re-christened Latter Day Saints' Messenger and Advocate. Oliver Cowdery was the first editor; he was replaced in 1835, and became editor again in March of 1836 (his brother, Warren, claiming that he actually fulfilled the editorial duties). In February of 1837, the press was sold to Joseph Smith, Jr. and Sidney Rigdon; the Ohio paper published its last issue in September, 1837. In 1844, Sidney Rigdon claimed that he was the rightful heir of Joseph Smith as head of the Mormon Church after the death of Smith in June of 1844. Rigdon established an offshoot of the main Mormon Church in Pittsburgh, PA, and revived the Messenger and Advocate in 1844, and advocated his vision of the church.

    Issues included: The Kirtland, Ohio newspaper: Volume 3, numbers 2 through 7 (monthly, November, 1836 through April, 1837, inclusive). The Pittsburgh newspaper: Volume 1 numbers 1-6, 8, 12, 15, 16 (monthly or bi-weekly, October 15, 1844 through July 1, 1845, non-consecutive).
