[Mormons]. [Joseph Smith]. Mormons Bog. En Beretning, skreven ved Mormons Haand paa Tavler efter Nephis Tavler... Oversat paa Engelsk fra Grundtexten af Joseph Smith den Yngre. Kjøbenhavn: Erastus Snow, 1851. First Danish edition of The Book of Mormon, and the first foreign language edition of The Book of Mormon. Twelvemo (5.75 x 3.5 inches; 149 x 87 mm.). [viii], 568 pages. Bound in near-contemporary half dark brown calf over marbled boards, blue paper pastedowns (possibly supplied later). Some wear to binding, pastedowns split at hinge apart from inner portion (binding still secure), some occasional dampstaining, soiling, foxing, creasing in text. Several pages trimmed a bit close (no apparent loss of text). A very good example of this rarity (only 3,000 copies were printed). Housed in quarter morocco clamshell case. Flake and Draper 705. "Preface by Erastus Snow, May 1, 1851... The first missionaries to Denmark, Apostle Erastus Snow and Peter O. Hansen, were appointed in October, 1849, and arrived in Copenhagen in the summer of 1850. The translation of the 'Book of Mormon' was made by Elder Hansen, and was the first to be printed in a foreign language. In 1855, Elder Hansen conducted a colony of 440 Scandinavian converts from Europe to Salt Lake City. He died at Manti, Utah, August 9, 1895..."
