Lovecraft's family's Bible, with his birth record and the various records of his family members. Large quarto (11.625 x 9.25 x 2.375 inches; 295 x 235 x 61 mm.). [4], 9-14, xvi, 1-16, [1]-104, [2], 1-48, viii, [9]-640, 1-104, [4], [641]-[848], 1-32, 1-44, 1-36 pages. Frontispiece and fifteen additional inserted plates; in-text and full-page engravings; maps. Heavily colored brown contemporary leather; stamped in blind and gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges trimmed and gilt. Chipping and wear to binding, particularly at hinges, head and foot of spine, corners; small areas of white soiling to boards, pale yellow streak to rear board; dark soiling at spine, gilt-stamped title on front board; evidence of attempt to recolor leather with what appears to be brown paint running length of hinges, some splashed onto bottom edge of text block; repairs made to inner hinges. Some scratching, rubbing away of gilt from edges of text block. Occasional marginal thumb soiling, short tears scattered throughout interior of text block; some offsetting of plates onto protective tissue. Stain and tear to page 101 of "Dictionary." Damp stain at fore-edge of majority of New Testament. Good. Family Bible gifted to Lovecraft's mother: "Miss S. Susie Phillips. From her Mother. March 22nd, 1889." Marriage certificate of Winfield S. Lovecraft and Sarah S. Phillips inserted between pages 102 and 103 of Apocrypha. Decorative leaves with marriage, birth, and death inscriptions found just before New Testament, include the following: "Howard Phillips Lovecraft born Aug. 20th, 1890. Providence, R. I., 94 Angell Street." Much later inscriptions in a different pen and hand note the deaths of Sarah and H. P. Lovecraft.
