[Bible in German] [Martin Luther, translator]. Biblia. Das ist: die gantze heylige schrifft Teutsch... Frankfurt: Weigand Han (heirs of), 1574. Folio (9.5 x 15 inches; 242 x 381 mm). [18] 352 402 [2] leaves, complete. Woodcut title pages in red and black, profusely illustrated with woodcut illustrations and woodcut initials throughout. Contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, corner-pieces with bosses, partial clasps, spine with six raised bands; binding scratched and rubbed with losses, particularly to spine with losses of head- and tail-pieces, catch of clasps to front board but clasps themselves lacking. Front pastedown torn revealing wooden board beneath, bookplate and ink ownership to front pastedown, remnants of another bookplate removed from pastedown. Edges trimmed and formerly gilt and stamped in blind, almost entirely rubbed away, but impressions still visible. Hinges weak but holding. Tears and chipping throughout, dampstaining and foxing throughout, minimal in some places but heavier in others. Some passages underlined in ink (both black and red used) and with scattered ink marginal notations throughout. Gouge through lower margin of text block from leaf 234 (Old Testament) - leaf 38 (New Testament), primarily confined to margins but turns into an open tear in leaves 5-6 and touches the woodcut illustration on leaf 5 verso. Some unobtrusive worming to few leaves at back. Still a good copy of this 1574 edition of the Bible, translated by Martin Luther into German. USTC 616261.
