The First Bible Printed in New Jersey and the Second Quarto King James Bible Printed in America

[Bible in English]. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated Out of the Original Tongues: and with the Former Translations Diligently compared and revised. Trenton: Isaac Collins, 1791. First bible printed in New Jersey, one of 5,000 copies. Quarto. Approximately 10.5 x 8.25 inches. Unpaginated. Text in double columns. Bound without Ostervald's Practical Observations (as is most common for this title), otherwise complete. Contemporary full brown calf, covers ruled in blind, five raised bands on spine. Front board and front free endpaper detached, binding worn, text toned, soiled, and foxed, front free endpaper with previous owner's inscription, ink family history on final leaf of Apocrypha and following two blank leaves. A fair copy of this early American bible.

    More Information:

"The first Bible printed in New Jersey, the second quarto edition of the King James Bible printed in America, and the most ambitious project of Isaac Collins' printing career" (Felcone). "The first edition of the Bible printed in New Jersey, U.S.A...particularly known for its accurate text, and served as a standard of correctness for later printers" (Herbert). According to Hills, customers could choose in advance if their copies were bound with the Apocrypha (which this copy has) and Ostervald's Practical Observations (which this copy lacks, which is quite common for this title). This Bible is commonly regarded as the first that was typographically correct (with only two minor errors found after publication). Felcone 12. Evans 23184. Hills 31. Herbert 1354.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
