    Description

[Bible in English]. [Isaiah Thomas]. The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: together with the Apocrypha: translated out of the original tongues, with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by the special command of King James I, of England. With marginal notes and references. To which are added, an index, and an alphabetical table of all the names in the Old and New Testaments, with their significations. Worcester: Isaiah Thomas, 1791. First Royal Quarto edition. 1,310 pages (continuous pagination). Three title pages. Two engraved frontispieces.

Full period-style mottled calf, spine in compartments with five raised bands, no titles. Between the Apocrypha and the New Testament are two printed pages for family records of marriages, births of children and deaths, which have holograph pen entries for the family of Thomas Bond of Westborough. Boards a little rubbed and with small patches of light wear at the edges and corners. Typical foxing and browning, heavier in places. Minor edge wear and small tears to the sheets and first frontis, front free endpaper loose, darkening from glue on endpapers and endleaves, otherwise in very good condition. A lovely copy of an important American Bible.

"The two Thomas Bibles of 1791 were without doubt far in advance of any other publications of the same kind that had appeared in America in point of typography, excellence of paper, binding, and general execution. Benjamin Franklin, an expert in printing, paid a high compliment to Thomas when he said, 'He is the Baskerville of America"' (Wright, Early Bibles of America). ESTC W4494. Evans 23185.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
