[Bible in English]. [Breeches Bible]. The Bible... London: 1599. Early reprint with the heart-shaped border on the New Testament title-page.

    More Information:

[Geneva or "Breeches" Bible]. The Bible: That is, the Holy Scriptures conteined in the Old and New Testament. London: Christopher Barker, 1599 [actually later]. Reprint of the 1599 version of the Geneva bible by Barker. Full-page engraved title and numerous smaller engravings throughout. Octavo (8.5 x 6.625 inches; 215 x 169 mm.). 190, 127, [91, apocrypha, 121, [11, tables] leaves. [bound with]: the book of common prayer [lacking title page]. London: Robert Barker, 1632. [59] leaves. [bound with:] The Book of Psalmes: Collected Into English Meeter... by Sternehold and Hopkins. [viii], 93, [7, prayers] pages. In recent mottled calf, double ruled in blind with decoration to boards, spine in five sections with raised bands four compartments decorated in blind, red label stamped in gilt with date stamped in gilt at lower portion of spine. Mild wear to front joint; boards slightly splayed. Inserted title page at front with adhesive residue along left portion; top edge trimmed unevenly, approaching the text at the top of some pages, particularly to rear portion of the new testament;  scattered examples of foxing and dampstains; page edges stained in spots; pages ruffled. A handful of notations in an old hand scattered throughout; births recorded at verso of title page, circa late seventeenth century. Very good overall. An attractive copy of this important English translation, the first Bible produced for mass consumption in England, this being the so-called "breeches" bible, with Genesis Chapter III Verse 7 reading "breeches" rather than "aprons" as it appeared in the King James Bible. From the Collection of Daniel J. King.
