[George Washington]. Fair Copy of Notes for the Biography of Washington by John Pickering. Twenty-three pages, on 7.25" x 9.75" lined paper, n. p., n. d. Bound in plain wrappers which read: "Biography of Washington in Notes written by himself upon a Sketch made by Col. D. Humphries - Copied from the original autograph of Washington in possession of the late Mrs. Humphries. J. P." At the bottom of page one, Pickering writes: "The word his in the original appears to have been altered from my, in order to accommodate it to Col Humphreys work." The notes contained refer mostly to Washington's early military career during the French and Indian War. Wrappers are heavily chipped and stained; both wrappers are detached. Toned with light foxing.

    More Information:

There are specific references to his mission in 1754 to establish an outpost at the fork of the Ohio River where he learns that the French have preceded him, establishing the post of Du Quesne. He goes on to recount his skirmish with French scouts where he has one horse shot out from under him, his hat and clothes torn from musket balls, but he sustains no injury.

On the last page, Pickering writes: "The information given in these sheets - tho related from Memory, It is believe to be depended upon - It is hastily and incorrectly related - but not so much for these reasons, as some others it is earnestly requested that after Col. Humphreys has extracted what he shall judge necessary and given it in his own language, that the whole of what Is here contained may be returned to GW, or committed to the flames. Some of the enumerations are trifling; and perhaps more important circumstances omitted."

John Pickering was the son of Timothy Pickering, the third Secretary of State serving under presidents George Washington and John Adams.
