    More Information:

Horace Walpole (1717-97), despite his historic reputation as a gossip, is best remembered for his letters.  He was an intimate of both Thomas Gray and Thomas Ashton, and established his own printing press at his home, the so-called Gothic "Strawberry Hill"; his first publication there was Gray's Pindaric Odes.  The present offering, although intended to be read in a light-hearted vein, attracted much censure from Walpole's contemporaries. Park (1759-1834) antiquary, bibliographer, and artist, reedited Walpole's work and proposed a further continuation which did not come to pass. "Park was described as the best-informed student of his time 'in our old poetical literature and biography,' and Southey praised him to Longmans as the best editor for the 'Bibliotheca Britannica' which they projected."
