Raymond Chandler. The Big Sleep. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1939. First edition, advance proof issue. Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 187 x 125 mm.). [8], 277, [1, note on type] pages. Publisher's perfect binding in the original green wrappers, front printed in black; all edges of the text block trimmed. Very slightly skewed; backstrip sunned and starting to split from wrappers at front and bottom rear; mild soft creasing and scratches to wrappers. Normal toning to edges and interiors of text block. Very good, given the fragile nature of this publication. Housed in custom black cloth chemise in black cloth slipcase with black leather spine labels stamped in gilt. The hard-boiled crime novel marking the first appearance Chandler's detective Philip Marlowe. Basis for two film adaptations in 1946 and 1978. The first, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, co-written by William Faulkner, was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Bruccoli A 1.1.a; The Dark Page 62; a Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
