Publisher's pinkish orange smooth V-cloth, spine and front board lettered and stamped in blue, publisher's device stamped in blue on the rear board; top edge stained blue, others trimmed; in original dust jacket. Spine very slightly leaning; backstrip faintly dulled; corners and spine ends lightly worn. Binder's glue faintly discoloring endpapers near hinges; front endpaper with two small splashes. Dust jacket spine panel faintly dulled; small chips and short closed tears at each of the fold edges; very short closed tear to lower edge of front panel; light wear and faint soiling to folds; all but the flaps browned on verso. An attractive very good or better copy. Chandler's follow up to The Big Sleep. The second work featuring Philip Marlowe, but the first to make it to the big screen, with unconventional hero Dick Powell in his first leading role in an action film, directed by Edward Dmytryk for RKO Radio Pictures and released in 1944 as Murder, My Sweet.
