Ray Bradbury's Final Typescript Draft of His 1968 Radio Play, Leviathan '99, Signed by Him and With His Manuscript Corrections and Notes

Ray Bradbury. Leviathan '99. Los Angeles, 1966. Hand-corrected final draft of the radio play eventually performed on BBC Radio 3 on May 3, 1968. First leaf is on Bradbury's personal stationery, and written in his hand is: "'Leviathan/'99'/by/Ray/Bradbury/Final/Revisions/-1966". Quarto. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. [1], 54 leaves, leaves (numbered 1 to 53), rectos only (except for some calendar markings on the verso of the final page in Bradbury's hand). There is a blank leaf included, not reckoned within pagination. First few leaves with paperclip markings, a few corrections on adhesive or stickers throughout, some hand corrections slightly blurry. Still, fine. Each page of the typescript is in a laminated pocket, with all leaves contained in a clasp-bound folder. Housed in a custom-built quarter blue morocco clamshell case. From the John McLaughlin/Book Sail Collection.

    More Information:

After completing this script, Bradbury submitted it to NBC, who decided against producing it. He then offered it to a BBC producer, D. G. Bridson, personally, while his agent sent a copy to the BBC script editor, Richard Imison (leading to some confusion at the BBC as to who would ultimately produce this play). This play was one of Bradbury's forays into experimental drama, and had an electronic score by Tristram Cary. The lead character of Ishmael was portrayed by Denys Hawthorne, and the Captain was played by Christopher Lee (Lee used his considerable influence at the BBC to get the play produced).
