R. Austin Freeman. The Red Thumb Mark. London: Collingwood Bros., [1907]. First edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.75 inches; 185 x 120 mm.). [viii], 232 pages; frontispiece. Publisher's black cloth, front board and spine lettered in white, finger print design stamped in red on the front board. Joints, spine ends and corners with subtle repairs, lettering refreshed. Front board lightly rubbed; trace wear to board edges; publisher imprint at base of spine nearly perished. Previous owner signature to the front paste down; some light soiling to the rear endpapers; occasional marginal soiling throughout text block. Still, a very good sophisticated copy, housed in a quarter-morocco clamshell case. Freeman's first book published under his own name. First appearance of Dr. Thorndyke. A Haycraft-Queen cornerstone. From the KoKo Collection.

More Information: "...The creator of John Thorndyke, M. D., was a Modern before the Moderns. He was the true and undoubted 'parent' of the scientific detective story in the highest meaning of the phrase, and remains to-day the living dean of that form--if not, indeed, of all detective story writers of whatever style or persuasion"  (Murder for Pleasure, p. 70).
