DescriptionPunch and London Charivari. The Complete First Sixty-Six Years in Original Bindings.
[William Makepeace Thackeray; Henry Mayhew; John Leech; Richard Doyle; John Tenniel; et. al.]. [Punch Magazine]. Punch and London Charivari. London: Published for the Proprietors, [n.d., 1841] - 1906. The first sixty-six annual volumes of Punch Magazine, complete and consecutive. Sixty-six quarto volumes. Uniformly bound in publisher's full blue cloth, boards paneled and elaborately stamped in blind, front boards, with gilt central "Punch" logo, spines decoratively stamped and numbered in gilt. All edges gilt. Most volumes with some degree of wear. Some boards lightly soiled and rubbed, some may be slightly bowed. Most spines somewhat soiled and some lightly faded, with some small tears and chips at the head. Some edges rubbed and corners gently bumped. Some hinges cracked. Some ownership markings or bookseller labels. Generally Very Good.
Punch was begun in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer Landells, who published the (initially) struggling magazine until 1842, when they were forced to sell it to London publishers Bradbury and Evans. Punch featured many illustrations by some of the most prominent artists of the day, including John Leech, Richard Doyle and John Tenniel. It became the hallmark of humorous yet conservative articles and illustrations. They even coined the term "cartoon". Their success increased steadily until the mid-1940s when circulation began to decline. They had to close their doors in 1992 after 150 years of publication. It enjoyed a brief resurrection in 1996, but was forced to close again in 2002.
