    More Information:

Franz Hogenberg "was born at Mechlin, and came to England with his brother Remigius about 1560... About 1577 he settled at Cologne, where he produced many spirited plates representing the events of the 16th century, in which the oppressors of his country are not spared. He was a Protestant, and was made a citizen of Hamburg in 1585; he visited Copenhagen in 1588, and died at Cologne in 1590." [Bryan's Dict.]

His illustrations of the first part of the 80 Years War covered the events from the beginning in 1568 to the Twelve-Year Truce of 1609-1621. He produced numerous engraved scenes of battlers on land and sea, portraits of major figures, maps, slaughters of civilians, etc. These engravings were originally accompanied with engraved text descriptions of the scenes they represented and served as examples of early illustrated newspapers, disseminating contemporary views of the wars.

They were quite popular and were used to illustrate books of the time including Willem Baudartius' "Afbeeldinge ende beschrijinghe. der Veldslagen en Belgeringen onder Prins van Oranje geschiedenis", editions of Meteren's histories, etc. We have not been able to conclusively assign these plates to any particular publication but they are contemporary.
