[Slavery]. Engraving Depicting Ellen Craft, a Fugitive Slave. Ca. 1850s.
Measures 6.25 x 9.25 inches. Some foxing to edges. Very good.

    More Information:

Ellen Smith Craft of Georgia (1826-1891), together with her husband William, was one of the early celebrities of the American Abolitionist movement. Ellen, daughter of her mother's owner, was light-skinned enough to pass as white, and together with her carpenter husband, mounted an audacious escape dressed as a white man with her husband posing as 'his' servant. They remained in Boston until the Fugitive Slave Act compelled them to flee to England in 1848, where they embarked on a speaking tour recounting their adventures. This was doubtless the occasion for which this print was made; Ellen Craft is shown here wearing a high beaver hat and the arm sling that she wore during her escape, a ruse to cover the fact that at the time she was unable to write.
