[Incunable Leaf]. [Biblia Latina]. [Mainz: Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer, 1462]. A beautiful printed leaf from the first dated bible. Folio, approximately 16 x 11.5 inches. Printed in double-columns, forty-eight lines on each page, with manuscript initials, running heads, and chapter numbers in red and blue, one initial in blue manuscript and many letters heightened in red. This leaf has the remainder of chapter XXIII, the entirety of chapter XXIIII [sic] and the beginning of chapter XXV in Chronicles. Left margin worn from where it was removed from the book, some wrinkling at edges of leaf, some soiling and thumbsoiling, some faint tape residue on the recto of the leaf. Still, a fine leaf, with some lovely manuscript initials. Hain-Copinger 3050. Proctor 79.

"The fines of all the early Bibles, printed throughout in the 118 type, with the headings in red and numerous two line capitals and chapter numbers in red and blue... The Bible of 1462 marks the close of the great period of printing at Mainz. Whether six, seven, or nine years separate it from the Forty-two line Bible, the time had been splendidly employed. The capacity of the new art had been demonstrated to the full, and taken as a group these early Fust and Schoeffer incunabula have never on their own lines been surpassed..." (Pollard).
