    Twelve Incunable Fragments Printed by
    Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer

    [Bonifacius VIII]. Liber sextus Decretalium [printed leaf fragments on vellum]. Mainz: Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer, 17 December, 1465. Twelve fragments in three open mattings. Printed on vellum with red and blue rubrication. Larger print is text, smaller print is commentary. Occasional creases, dampstains, light soiling, paper remnants in the margins of two fragments, ten of the twelve fragments have a small pencil number on its corner, eight fragments have one or two short rows of miniscule pinholes, and one fragment with small hole at top with loss to four lines of text. Else, fragments in good condition. Approximate size of fragments range from 2 x 4 inches to 5 x 5 inches, with one two page fragment, measuring 4 x 11.25 inches.
    The "Liber Sextus" ("Sixth Book") of the "Corpus Juris Canonici" ("Corpus of Cannon Law"), was Pope Boniface VIII's (1235-1303) greatest achievement. Both Fust and Schoeffer were assistants to Gutenberg, they went into business together and became the first successful printing company. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.
