    The Excellent Second Edition of Philemon Holland's English Translation of Pliny the Elder

    Pliny the Elder. The Historie of the World: Commonly called the Naturall Historie of C. Plinius Secundus. Translated into English by Philemon Holland, Doctor of Physicke. London: Printed for Adam Islip, 1634. Second edition of this English translation by one of the best Elizabethan translators. Quarto. Approximately 12 x 8.25 inches. [lvii], 614, [42, Index], [xii], 1-632, [82, Index], [1, Advertisement], [1, blank] pages. Bound in contemporary full dark brown calf, spine elaborately tooled in gilt and with black gilt morocco lettering label in compartments, five raised bands. Binding worn, corners bumped, front joint cracking (yet still quite solid), cords partially visible, hinges cracking, fore-edge of text a bit close to margin with partial loss of some page numbers and many marginal notes, pages 27/28 and 29/30 in the first part with some restoration at top which is coming loose, a few wax stains and related offsetting on a few pages, about 100 pages in the second part with some worm damage, with some loss, pages 221/222 and 223/224 with duplicate leaves. Bookplate of the Royal Meteorological Society, Symons Bequest, and beneath it their label stating it was sold by their order. Still, a very good copy.
