    More Information:

VERY RARE EDITION of Pliny's Natural History with comments by the Italian humanist Hermolao Barbaro (1454-1493) and thematic and geographic indexes. Barbaro's Castigationes Plinianae published in Rome in 1492 (the discussion of Plny's Natural History), was considered by his contemporaries to be the most authoritative work on Pliny. Even before his death, he was considered a leading authority on the Greek and Latin works of antiquity. Erasmus frequently cited Barbaro's work, often with respect.

Provenance: Prize for excellence in rhetorics, granted in 1688 to Claude Olivier Marion by Renate Lagogue de Saint Croix, the former owner and principal of the college at Vitry ("gymnnasiarcha Vitriacensis"), (supra libros of the college, handwritten mention).

Graesse V-339. Not in Adams, nor STC French, nor Dibdin, nor in Brunet. Very scarce.
