More Information: Pietro Bembo (1470-47), a Venetian and restorer of polite literature in Italy, was well known for the purity and correctness of his Latin diction, marked by a Ciceronian style.  In 1513 he was appointed by Pope Leo X to the office of domestic secretary of the apostolic secretariat, but his health caused him to retire to Padua in 1521.  In 1530 he became librarian and historian of the Venetian republic with the task of writing a history of that state (first published - posthumously - by Aldine Press in 1551), but returned to Rome in 1538 as a cardinal in pectore.  He died as the result of a riding accident. Columbus is mentioned in Book VI which includes an account of the Spanish and Portugese explorations. Index Aurel. 116.428. Adams B599. BM Italian STC p.80. Parenti 72. Gamba 130.EDIT 16 CNCE 5039.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
