    How Nebulae Form Stars

Pierre-Simon Laplace. Exposition du Systeme du Monde. Paris: Cerce-Social, [1796]. First edition. Two octavo volumes. 314, [4]; 312, [4] pages. With half-titles. Bound in contemporary quarter dark brown morocco over burgundy pebbled paper boards, spines paneled and lettered in gilt in compartments, four raised bands, marbled endleaves. Joints just starting, some wear to binding (especially at corners), some mild toning, foxing to text. Still, fine.

    More Information:

In this book, Laplace suggests that the solar system, including the sun, came from a nebula (rotating from west to east). This theory was popular for nearly a century, but has since been discounted, although it is considered that it is a basic representation of how stars are formed in nebulae. "Laplace has been called the 'Newton of France'" [PMM]. Printing and the Mind of Man 252 (about Traité de Méchanique Céleste). Wolf II 100-101.
