Schenck's Rare Book of Early Albumen Photographs of Long Branch

[Photography]. J. H. Schenck. Album of Long Branch: a Series of Photographic Views, with Letter-Press Sketches. New York: John F. Trow, 1868. First edition of this rare and charming photographic book with 74 (of 78) charming albumen photos of homes and buildings of this beautiful Victorian sea-side community. Octavo. 161, [1, blank] pages. Title-page printed in red and black. With thirty-seven (of thirty-nine) inserted leaves of two albumen photographs each, all reckoned within pagination. Publisher's full green cloth over beveled boards, covers decoratively ruled and stamped in blind, front cover and spine lettered in gilt. Binding worn and soiled, text shaken with several loose pages (some of which are torn and otherwise damaged), lacking mounted photographic leaves (pages 11/12 and 143/144), as well as text leaf 145/146. Still, a fair copy of this very rare and lovely book.

    More Information:

The photos were done by G. Pach (the final photograph is of him standing with his camera in front of his sky-lit studio with his wagon), and are quite nice. The photos depict a large variety of different architectural styles used in the buildings at Long Branch, each with a page of letter-press description. In the preface, Pach describes his difficulty in obtaining good negatives in the sometimes windy and inclement weather of Long Branch. Pach and his brothers eventually established one of the most successful photographic studios in New York City of the late nineteenth-century. A true rarity: this is only the second copy to appear at auction in the last fifty years.
