Helvetius. De l'Esprit. Paris: Chez Durand, 1758. [Bound Together With:] Helvetius. Mandement de Monseigneur l'Archeveque de Paris. Paris: Chez C. F. Simon, 1778. First editions (second issue of l'Esprit). Approximately 10 x 7.25 inches. Quarto. [4], xxii, 643, [1, approbation]; [4, Condamnation et Prohibition]; 28, [3, Extrait des Registres de Parlement], [1, blank], 31, [1, blank] pages. Contemporary full mottled calf, spine tooled in gilt, gilt red morocco lettering label, all edges stained red. Spine worn, front joint cracking, some wear to corners. Still, a very good copy. This book was condemned by the church as a sacrilegious defense of atheism, and was denounced by both Louis XV and Parliament. However, this work was a landmark in the development of utilitarianism, and influenced both Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill.
