Francis Bacon. The Elements Of The Common Lawes Of England. London: [R. Young for] Assigns of John More, 1639.

    More Information:

Francis Bacon. The Elements Of The Common Lawes Of England. Branched into a double Tract; The One Containing a Collection of some principall Rules and Maximes of the Common Law, with their Latitude and Extent...The Other The Use of the Common Law, for preservation of our Persons, Goods, and good Names. London: [R. Young for] Assigns of John More, 1639.

Quarto. A-Z4, Aa3, [lacks Aa4 blank.] [20], 44, 49-94, [8], 72 pages. Old limp vellum, darkened and wrinkled, one tie remaining; eighteenth century owner's note on inside of front cover, some pen trials on S4v, title page soiled, minor dampstains, pages lightly cockled, small hole in the fore-edge from biopredation, small tear in front free endpaper, occasional annotations, good margins. Very good.

Francis Bacon (1561-1626), famed statesman and Lord Chancellor, was the founder of a new scientific method in which experiment and facts were to carry greater weight than speculation and philosophy.  Espousing such, he bore not a little influence upon Locke, Leibniz, Huygens, Robert Boyle, Voltaire, and others.

"This is a very profound Treatise on the subject of Uses, and has been highly esteemed by the profession...The Elements of the Common Law was one of the earliest, if not the first, published collections of Maxims of the English Law." -Marvin.

"Though some great masters of the law did out-go him in bulk and particularities of cases: yet, in the science of the grounds and mysteries of the law, he was exceeded by none." -Blackstone.
