Contemporary calf, sympathetically rebacked retaining original
spine, covers ruled in gilt, spine elaborately tooled in gilt in
compartments, burgundy gilt calf lettering label, five raised
bands, later endpapers, preserving contemporary bookplate. Moderate
wear to covers, preserved spine slightly chipped, pages 186, 202
and 296 have sizeable chips on the lower corner, not affecting
text, page 237 has a large tear on the lower third of the page,
page 311 has a short marginal tear. Still, very good.
This "New Edition" of Hume's Essays and Treatises on Several
Subjects from 1758 saw the renaming of several of Hume's
seminal treatises. "Some Alterations are made on the Titles of the
Treatises, contained in the following Volume. What in former
Editions was called Essays moral and political, is here
entitled Essays, moral, political, and literary, Part I.
The political Discourses form the second Part. What in
former Editions was called, Philosophical Essays
concerning human Understanding, is here entitled An
Enquiry concerning human Understanding. The four
Dissertations lately published are dispersed thro' different
Parts of this volume" (from the "Advertisement").
