    More Information:

Chesterfield was well-known among his contemporaries as a witty, urbane man of the world. The letters in this collection are to his illegitimate son, and they span a thirty year period (1738-1768), ending only with the premature death of young Stanhope. The letters attempted to inculcate both knowledge and manners and present an unmatched picture of proper British breeding and social graces. The many subsequent editions of this work attests to the high esteem in which they were held, justly earning Chesterfield's Letters a place of honor in English literary history. Rothschild 596.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
