Philip Barry. The Philadelphia Story. A comedy in three acts. New York: Coward McCann, Inc., [1939]. First edition in book form, in rare dust jacket. Signed by Katharine Hepburn, who starred in both the Broadway and film adaptations, and additionally signed and inscribed by the author, both to the front free endpaper recto. Octavo. 206 pages. Publisher's blue cloth, upper board and spine stamped in white; original photographic dust jacket. Slightly cocked, head and foot of spine just pushed, foxed. Cream endpapers; somewhat foxed. Internally clean and tight, all edges trimmed, top edge stained dark blue; text block edges toned with minor wear. Dust jacket with publisher's decorative clip and price listed as $2.00; moderate edgewear, chipping to head and foot of spine and corners, spine sunned, foxed on recto and verso, somewhat rubbed and soiled. Housed in custom brown cloth clamshell case, black leather spine label stamped in gilt. Very good book with good or better dust jacket.

Interestingly, Barry wrote the play specifically for Hepburn, who backed the play in hopes to use it as a vehicle for her return to feature film after several flopped projects. Hepburn starred in the Broadway production and afterward was gifted the film rights by Howard Hughes; she convinced MGM to buy the rights with the caveat that she retain veto-power over producer, director, screenwriter, and cast. Luckily, the film was a critical and commercial success, garnering six Academy Award nominations, of which it won two. It has since been identified for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. MGM adapted the story again in 1956, this time as a musical titled High Society, directed by Charles Waters and starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra.
