This novel, about a United States Air Force general who suffers a mental breakdown and orders a nuclear strike against the U.S.S.R. was the basis of Stanley Kubrick's classic satire, Dr. Strangelove, or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). It was first published in the U. K. as Two Hours to Doom by Peter George (using the pseudonym of Peter Bryant), and later it was published in the U.S. as Red Alert under George's real name. George worked on the Dr. Strangelove screenplay with Kubrick and Terry Southern.
