More Information:
Punch was begun in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and Ebenezer
Landells, who published the (initially) struggling magazine until
1842, when they were forced to sell it to London publishers
Bradbury and Evans. Punch featured many illustrations by
some of the most prominent artists of the day, including John
Leech, Richard Doyle and John Tenniel. It became the hallmark of
humorous yet conservative articles and illustrations. They even
coined the term "cartoon". Their success increased steadily until
the mid-1940s when circulation began to decline. They had to close
their doors in 1992 after 150 years of publication. It enjoyed a
brief resurrection in 1996, but was forced to close again in
2002.
