FIRST PRINTING OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION. September 23, 1862 issue of the "New York Herald." The front page, first column has "A Proclamation by the President of the United States... all Slaves in States in Rebellion January 1, 1863 to Be Free... The President Renews the Offer to Pay for Slaves of Loyalists..." This issue also contains news on Antietam, Iuka, the temporary desertion of 250 Union soldiers from a camp in Newark, NJ, Indian atrocities in Utah, a lecture by George Francis Train and the reopening of Laura Keene's theatre. Generally, a very clean copy. Some light browning at central folds, with miniscule loss repaired with archival tape. This was the "preliminary proclamation" that came forth as a result of the Union victory at Antietam, along with other factors. Since the offer of compensation was not taken up, the proclamation became official on January 1st, as stipulated.
