Publisher's pictorial paper wrappers. Internally generally clean and tight; minor to moderate text block edgewear, intermittent chipping and creasing to margins but not affecting text, minor intermittent soiling and foxing, a few issues with gutters overextended.

October 1891 with a small dampstain to the top left corner of the text block, a few issues with spine perished and lower wrapper detached but most present [December 1892 (lacking lower wrapper), August 1893, December 1893, April 1904, May 1904 (lacking lower wrapper), March 1911, January 1924], three issues with open tears or clips to initial advertisements or table of contents [February 1893, June 1893, October 1901], November 1901 issue with upper wrapper trimmed in top margin and affecting text, three issues with ink ownership or marks to upper wrappers [December 1901], March 1904, December 1913.

Some issues housed in individual printed boxes [May 1893, July 1904, October 1908, April 1911, December 1911, September 1917]. The Valley of Fear complete run (nine issues, September 1914 - May 1915) housed in custom brown cloth clamshell case backed in brown morocco, spine lettered in gilt. Good to Very Good.

Apart from the separate publications of A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four, this collection represents the complete canon of Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" stories as published in their original format, fully illustrated with the classic artwork of Sidney Paget, Arthur Twidle, Frank Wiles, Howard Elcock, and others.

Much like a flipbook animating illustrations, these are the pages from which Holmes and Watson truly seem to come to life. Readers were able to follow the pair on their adventures, page to page and illustration to illustration, capturing imaginations in a way that was uniquely novel. Doyle himself notes, "A number of monthly magazines were coming out at that time, notable among which was 'The Strand', then as now under the editorship of Greenhough Smith. Considering these various journals with their disconnected stories it had struck me that a single character running through a series, if it only engaged the attention of the reader, would bind that reader to that particular magazine... Looking round for my central character I felt that Sherlock Holmes, whom I had already handled in two little books, would easily lend himself to a succession of short stories."
