    Four Volumes of The Quarto, an Illustrated Periodical

    [Illustrated Periodical] The Quarto. An Artistic, Literary & Musical Quarterly. London: J. S. Virtue, [1896, 1897, 1898]. First editions. Four volumes total, each lavishly illustrated with woodcuts, engravings and photogravures, as well as musical notations. Quartos. Original green cloth with gilt titles and decoration. Gilt lacking to front cover of volume four. One of the 1896 volumes is overopened at B, with some splitting to the gathering. Volume four over-opened at I. Textblocks toned at edges, with some scattered foxing. Boards may exhibit some scuffing or scratches. Most tissue guards intact. Generally very good.
    Featuring contributions by Walter Crane, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Gilbert K. Chesterton, Joseph Pennell, Cyril Goldie, et al.
    Volume three (1897) contains the first and only printed translation by Professor Alfred Edward Housman of the poem Diffugere Nives by Horace. One of the 1896 volumes also contains one of G. K. Chesterton's first published articles, A Picture of Tuesday.
    From the preface, the periodical's chief aim is "to bring before the world the work of young or unknown artists who have at some time or other received instruction at The Slade [now the UCL Slade School of Fine Art in London]." From the Pre-Raphaelite Collection of William E. Fredeman.
