    Description

Pearl S. Buck. The Good Earth. New York: The John Day Company, [1931]. First edition, with "The John Day Publishing Company" on the copyright page and "flees" for "fleas" on page 100; inscribed by the author on the half-title: "For Harry Clark, / Greetings / from / Pearl S. Buck / February 9 / 1966." Buck also underlined the error "flees" on page 100, and marked it with an arrow on the left margin. Octavo (8 x 5.5 inches; 205 x 140 mm.). [vi], 375, [1, publisher's device], [2, blank] pages. Publisher's light brown cloth, spine and front board lettered and ruled in gilt and decoratively stamped in blind; top edge stained brown, others rough-trimmed; green and white pictorial endpapers; in original dust jacket. Backstrip faintly dulled with some mild creasing; spine gilt a little worn or tarnished; covers lightly rubbed with some mild soiling; front upper corner bumped. Top of text block lightly dust-soiled; text very slightly tanned. Dust jacket has several tape repairs on verso, some of which are visible on the jacket recto; jacket spine somewhat toned; some edgewear with several marginal tears to jacket (with aforementioned tape repairs to verso); price-clipped. Overall, a very good copy. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.

More Information: A handwritten note on the back of a bibliographical sheet laid in stating that Buck personally marked the point for the recipient.
