Paul Verlaine. Autograph Letter Signed and Drawing Signed.
    1) ALS. "P. Verlaine." Two pages on newsprint-like paper, 4.25" x 5.5", n.p. [Lisbon?]; Sunday 17 [no year]. In this letter to Laurent Tailhade (1854-1919), a French satirical poet, essayist, and translator, active in Paris in the 1890s and early 1900s, Verlaine writes [English translation], "Thank you my dear Tailhade for your kind anxiety shown by your last letter and pardon beforehand my present letter. I am in great need of money: what I get from my...labor is not enough for my needs. Have you not at the very bottom of your trunks or drawers namely, old shoes or slippers...and pants just good enough to wear? Which you would oblige me now to give me, if it is convenient, as soon as possible to be taken to the office of the Hotel de Lisbonne, 4 Rue de Vanzirard....It is such a long time since I have had the pleasure of seeing you." Letter is accompanied by a typed transcription in French and a carbon copy transcription in English. 2) Self-portrait drawing in pen and ink signed. "P.V." Drawing on front of envelope and flap, 4.5" x 3.75", n.p.; n.d. Portrait has several words in Verlaine's hand. Verlaine is shown seated, facing left, right hand pointing and left hand holding a cane. 3) Offprint of an 1890 article by Verlaine entitled "La Décoration & L'Art Industriel," which appeared in L'Artiste, which includes a note of an address, presumably in Verlaine's hand.

Paul-Marie Verlaine (1844-1896) was a French poet associated with the Decadent movement, and considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds; otherwise good. The drawing is in good condition. The magazine article is separating in the middle and very brittle.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
