    Description

Paul Cezanne. Autograph Letter Signed. "Paul Cezanne." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, 5"x 8", Aix; April 2, 1902.
In this letter addressed to the art critic and collector Ambroise Vollard from his studio in Aix, Cezanne tells Vollard that he must postpone the "expedition" for the canvas of your [Roses?]. He writes that although he would have greatly wished to submit the work to the 1902 Salon, he is pushing back that project's completion because he is dissatisfied with the result so far. Additionally, he is not giving up on pursuing his study that led him to certain trials that he hopes will prove fruitful. He has had a small art studio built on a piece of land he bought for that purpose. He continues his study and research and will keep Vollard informed.

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.

Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) was a French art dealer, considered one of the most important dealers in French contemporary art at the beginning of the twentieth century. He is credited with providing exposure and emotional support to numerous then-unknown artists, including Paul Cézanne, Renoir, Picasso, Gauguin, and van Gogh. Vollard was also an avid art collector and publisher.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds and there is slight separation along the horizontal fold and at the intersection of the fold and the center crease; a slight tear at right hand edge of horizontal fold on blank page 3; otherwise good.
